SCREW THE NORMAL LIFE!!! I'm going diving...

7 years on-air on national radio, 19 years of corporate bullshit, I've climbed the ladders always ONLY to find more stress, dissatisfaction and LESS time for what matters.

I packed up my bags in February 2009 with only 5 shirts and 4 pairs of shorts and became a PADI Instructor to live "THE SIMPLE LIFE".

THIS IS MY BLOG...

HOW WE CORNER OURSELVES INTO SLAVERY

Just think about that first pay-check you received!

The joy of having that little money that you could finally call your own! To spend as you wished!

PHASE 1

From taking the public transport, you suddenly decide that now you can afford a second hand car of your own.

You work day after day to ensure you have enough to pay for that precious car of yours! Every threat to your job sees you struggle to further perform! You MUST keep this job in order to pay the monthly repayments!

The year end comes, bonuses are paid and the wages are adjusted. You've suddenly found that with the bonus, you can afford a down-payment on a new car and probably afford a bigger monthly repayment!

PHASE 2

You now decide you're too adult to be living with your parents, as you're tired of having to answer the "Where have you been", "Why you so late", and "Did I see you bring someone home last night".

You now decide it's time to say adios to the folks and get a nice room of your own! I guess a few hundred in rental wont hurt that much!

So with the 2 to 3 following increments, you're asking yourself - why you're so tight-budgeted?

Suddenly a big job offer that pays you much more! FINALLY a time to be able to have some spare cash to spare and not go from month to month counting the days to the next pay-check!

So a new job is taken, new superiors, new management, new BIGGER SALARY & and now you can afford a gym membership...he he...

PHASE 3

You tell yourself that now you can finally afford to give-up on renting that room and get yourself a place that is finally all yours!

So from the monthly shared apartment rental, you've risen above the ranks of house mates! You now rent a whole apartment by yourself and have all the friends you want over...anytime you want!

You work harder...now slightly higher in the organization chart, you're required to put in the extra hours and you're stressing out a lot with deadlines and targets that you're ACCOUNTABLE for.

The pressure from above is forcing you to perform and shine - at the sacrifice of sleep, socializing, hobbies and loved ones.

You've worked hard and you're rewarded again at the end of the year at the expense of your soul!

HEY! But you've gotten another good bonus and a nice pay rise!

PHASE 4

You ask yourself, aside from the nice apartment you rent and the car that's starting to age, "What you've really earned for yourself through the years"? You realize that you've been foolish to have been paying for someone else's property!

Your nice little bonus and whatever savings you have are again dumped into owning your own little property, probably not as posh as the apartment you were renting but, "Hey! It's YOURS"!

You slog on for a couple more years and you're car is now starting to give way! You're now in a senior management position but the new kids that YOU have just recruited are driving fancier cars that you!

PHASE 5

In a year or 2, you get offered a job and the paycheck has again expanded. You're very pleased with your monthly take home figures at this point and you're feeling generous! "Pamper myself la for all these years I have been slogging"...

"How can I be respected and viewed as successful in my career if I drive this old junk"?

So to the showrooms we go again, and to the financing companies we sign away our new pay increments again.

BY THIS TIME, IT'S CAR, INSURANCES, CREDIT CARDS, GYM MEMBERSHIP AND YOUR HOUSE TO PAY!

You also probably have a woman in your life now who thinks you're just great!

She's thinking: "He owns his own house, he drives a nice car...she's thinking you're a good catch!

She's also thinking you can afford to take her to nice restaurants and to her favorite shop to buy something for this weekend's company annual dinner (and every single wedding dinner that comes along).

ARE YOU REALLY ASKING YOURSELF "WHY YOU'RE ALWAYS BROKE"?

Phase 6 - dumbass decides to get married!
Phase 7 - dumbass decides to have kids!
Phase 8 - dumbass decides to have more kids!
Phase 9 - dumbass decides to send his kids to private school!
Phase 10 - dumbass decides to send his kids overseas to study!
Phase 11 - dumbass retires and wonders why his retirement fund is insufficient!

The more I think about it, the more I come to believe that money is not, and has never been, a mean of trade as they say: it was completely unnecessary for that.
I believe money does not have any value and was never meant to have as it exist exclusively in an abstract way: in loaners' books or bankers' computers (a paper note doesn't worse anything).
Therefore the only reality of money is the money we owe. The money we have, as you said, has one and only one power and that power is for us to loan always a bit more. And how pathetic it is to realize that we actually do.
Thank you for making me wonder in the middle of the night my dear friend. I'll miss You.

Well I have to disagree with that, many ppl, 'grey' people as some may refer to deem money is as important as life. Sadly, but it is real as real can be.. It is used to trade for every single need and desire that could come to mind..

But in the end.. what have you done for yourself? the rat race, the children? someone else's dream?

Reality? Reality is what we perceive reality to be. Have you ever thought you could give people that you care for, a better quality of life thru contribution of your efforts?

Is it then not selfish to runaway from reality? Or are we really running away? Or is it the seek of self actualisation?

Two sides of the same coin.. for me, it's in you.. to decide which side you are on..

The most cruel deed in life.. is to lie to yourself..
