SCREW THE NORMAL LIFE!!! I'm going diving...

7 years on-air on national radio, 19 years of corporate bullshit, I've climbed the ladders always ONLY to find more stress, dissatisfaction and LESS time for what matters.

I packed up my bags in February 2009 with only 5 shirts and 4 pairs of shorts and became a PADI Instructor to live "THE SIMPLE LIFE".

ADVANCE OPEN WATER COURSE

(Course Price Approx RM850
)

Once you've gotten yourself certified as an
Open Water Diver, you may consider upgrading yourself to the Advance Open Water Diver Level.

This again is a lifelong license that will allow you to dive to as deep as 30 meters and will specialty-train you in some fields.

The Advance Open Water Diver License is really sufficient qualification to serve all your RECREATIONAL diving requirements.

There is no exam to take in this level of certification but your in-water skill training will ready you for more fun underwater.

In reality, there is one level of certification available prior to qualifying as an Advance Open Water Diver. This level is recognized as "Adventure Diver".

The Adventure Diver is a diver who has formally completed ANY THREE of the below-listed Adventure Dive Options.

PADI ADVENTURE DIVE OPTIONS:
  • Altitude Diving
  • AWARE - Fish Identification
  • Boat Diving
  • Digital Underwater Photographer
  • Diver Propulsion Vehicles
  • Drift Diving
  • Dry Suit Diving
  • Enriched Air
  • Multilevel and Computer Diving
  • National Geographic
  • Night Diving
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • Underwater Naturalist
  • Underwater Navigator
  • Underwater Photographer
  • Underwater Videographer
  • Other specialties that are constantly being added to the syllabus

The completion of ANY THREE of the above PLUS "Deep Dive" and "Underwater Navigation" qualifies you as an Advance Open Water Diver.

Because the combination of any 3 of the Adventure Diver Specialties can be done simultaneously with the Deep Dive and Underwater Navigation, often divers opt to proceed directly into the Advance Open Water Diver Certification Level.

THE TRAINING

To begin your Advance Open Water Training, your Instructor will discuss with you the Adventure Dive Options and have you choose the ones that are locally available at your dive center.

In Malaysia, Instructors commonly propose the following:

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy - Will significantly improve your buoyancy - there's really not much pride in claiming to be an Advance Open Water Diver when your bopping up and down in the company of Open Water Divers.
  • Night Diving - This Specialty will allow you to explore a brand new dimension in diving as you discover what happens underwater at night.
  • Search & Recovery - Will demonstrate different underwater search patterns and techniques for lifting objects from depth.
  • Wreck Diving - The Law & Hazards
  • Boat Diving - Familiarize yourself with the boat, boat diving procedures and boat diving entry & exit
  • Underwater Photography - Very basic overview of what's involved in taking pictures underwater.
  • Fish Identification
  • Drift Dive
  • Multilevel / Computer Dive
Once you and your Instructor have agreed on your selection, you will be assigned to read up (independent study) on the chapters of the Adventure Diver manual that are relevant to what you have chosen (Normally just 10 pages with lots of pictures).

You may also be assigned to watch a video (if this facility is available at your dive center).

After reading you will run through the Knowledge Reviews of each Specialty Chapter with your Instructor before proceeding to your in-water experience.

DEEP DIVE (Compulsory)

As part of this compulsory Specialty Training, you will be made to read the chapter on "Deep Diving", complete your knowledge reviews before following your Instructor on a deep dive.

Prior to the actual dive, your Instructor will give you a mathematical problem while he /she times the duration (time) you need to solve this problem on the surface.

Again he/she will give you a mathematical problem underwater to demonstrate the effect of depth to your mental "quickness".

How depth effects color changes will also be demonstrated.

UNDERWATER NAVIGATION (Compulsory)

Again you will be made to read the chapter on "Underwater Navigation" and conduct the knowledge reviews with your Instructor.

After this is done, you will be shown the correct way to use a compass (on shore) and your Instructor will explain to you how to achieve a closely accurate distance estimation by using your own Kick-cycles & time. This is a very easy task and should take you 2 minutes to fully understand.

Knowing the concept of kick-cycles will be necessary during your Underwater Navigation Dive when you will be required to use your compass underwater and made to swim a perfect square / triangle to end up exactly where you started.

Generally, The Advance Open Water Certification level is ALL FUN!

Just a little bit of reading, NO EXAMS and a lot of fun with your Instructor as you train to improve your diving skills and explore beyond what was allowed with your Open Water Diver Certification level.
